Lost your car key? Your insurance might cover it
Losing every key to your car is one of the more stressful things that can happen with a vehicle — and one of the least budgeted for. Good news: depending on your situation, part or all of the job might already be covered.
Three things worth checking
1. Your car insurance
Some policies include breakdown assistance or a specific "lost or stolen keys" add-on. It's not automatic — it usually depends on your level of cover (third party, third party fire & theft, comprehensive) — but it's always worth checking before paying out of pocket.
2. Your home insurance
Less well known: the "emergency call-out" cover on some home insurance policies extends to vehicle keys as well as house locks.
3. Your bank card
Some premium cards include personal liability cover that can pick up this kind of unexpected cost. It's worth checking your card's terms and conditions.
How to actually go about it
- We get started straight away — you don't need insurance approval before we can help.
- Ask for a detailed invoice: that's what your insurer will require. We always provide one that meets insurers' standard requirements.
- Send the file to your insurer to start the reimbursement process.
Exact cover and payout caps vary a lot between policies — the only way to know for sure is to call your insurer with your policy number to hand.
